Itinerary « Ile de Nantes, the heart of a sustainable city »

At the heart of the Nantes metro area, this island in the Loire is the embodiment of sustainable development achievements: the converted industrial buildings, the gardens, renewable energy, transit options, etc. On the west side of the island, this itinerary explores the various themes that helped Nantes win the "Green Capital" label in 2013 and the "Global Green City" award in Rio in 2012

Evening in the Palm Island Greenhouse – Botanical Gardens

With 100 municipal parks and gardens, like the Botanical Gardens and its 7 hectares of greenery in the city centre, Nantes lovingly cultivates its green heritage. As European Green Capital 2013, Nantes is one of the best endowed cities in the world with 57m² of green spaces per inhabitant. With 7 hectares of greenery, the Botanical Gardens are one France's 4 largest botanical gardens. Located at the centre of the Gardens, the Palm Island greenhouse is one of the park's most outstanding features.

"We wanted to bring together the new Nantes policy-makers in an original format, so we opted for a fun botanical-themed "strolling cruise" called "Nantes La Végétale"*. This itinerary on foot, electric boat and bike took us though little known areas of Nantes: the botanical islands on the Erdre River, the Japanese garden of the Ile de Versailles, the Petite Amazonie Reserve closed to the public, the curiosities of the Botanical Gardens and more. This amazing urban adventure captivated our guests!"
