At the heart of the Nantes metro area, this island in the Loire is the embodiment of sustainable development achievements: the converted industrial buildings, the gardens, renewable energy, transit options, etc. On the west side of the island, this itinerary explores the various themes that helped Nantes win the "Green Capital" label in 2013 and the "Global Green City" award in Rio in 2012
Evening in the Palm Island Greenhouse – Botanical Gardens
With 100 municipal parks and gardens, like the Botanical Gardens and its 7 hectares of greenery in the city centre, Nantes lovingly cultivates its green heritage. As European Green Capital 2013, Nantes is one of the best endowed cities in the world with 57m² of green spaces per inhabitant. With 7 hectares of greenery, the Botanical Gardens are one France's 4 largest botanical gardens. Located at the centre of the Gardens, the Palm Island greenhouse is one of the park's most outstanding features.
"We wanted to bring together the new Nantes policy-makers in an original
format, so we opted for a fun botanical-themed "strolling cruise"
called "Nantes La Végétale"*. This itinerary on foot, electric boat and
bike took us though little known areas of Nantes: the botanical islands
on the Erdre River, the Japanese garden of the Ile de Versailles, the
Petite Amazonie Reserve closed to the public, the curiosities of the
Botanical Gardens and more. This amazing urban adventure captivated our
